Although there has been an overall decrease in hate crime compared to the previous year, not all categories have followed this trend. Religious hate crimes have increased by 25%, while other strands have shown declines. Race-related hate crimes have decreased by 5%, sexual orientation hate crimes by 8%, disability hate crimes by 18%, and transgender hate crimes by 2%.

Recent research from 2024 highlights the ongoing issue of underreported hate crimes in England and Wales. The UK government’s “Hate Crime, England and Wales, Year Ending March 2024” statistical bulletin presents detailed data on police-recorded hate crimes. However, while the report captures official figures, it acknowledges that many hate crimes go unreported, indicating that the actual number of incidents is likely significantly higher than what is officially recorded.
